Top 5 Makeup Trends For Fall 2014

It’s here. That time of year when we trade in our bright, summery clothes for muted shades of brown, gray, and black. We doff our shorts and sandals and shimmy into leather leggings and boots.

But what about our faces? What do we do to transform our makeup to reflect the seasonal shift? I decided to get the bottom of the fall makeup trends so I met my makeup artist, Carly McClure of Faces by Carly, at the Nordstrom Beauty Department to find out what the fall fashion runways predicted would be hot as the weather grows cold.

Turns out, this season has some interesting trends on tap that will instantly transform your look. This fall it’s all about the eye – bold, colorful, shimmering. The face and lips play a lesser role, with a natural, nude look dominating the runways.

Here’s what Carly and I spotted as the top five makeup trends for fall.

The fall runways showed bold, dark metallics – gold, silver, midnight blue – applied to the entire lid. And while that’s more of a nighttime look, it’s also on point to apply a soft shimmer in the corners of the eyes for daytime.

Think thicker, not necessarily longer. Bold, baby doll lashes dominated the fall fashion runways.  With everything from spider-like, well-defined lash lines for nighttime to a softer, but still lush, lash line for day, batting your eyelashes will take on a whole new meaning this fall. Carly and I love Define-A-Lash mascara by Maybelline. It’s a great drugstore buy that will give your lashes that thicker look we’re all craving.

Again, it’s all about the eyes this season, so don’t be afraid to go all out with the eye liner. Dark eyeliner placed thick on the upper and lower lids is key. This is also a great way to try the metallic trend without committing to covering the entire lid. I love Bobbi Brown eyeliner. This season I’m using her metallic cream shadow in Thunderstorm as my eyeliner.

This is another fun way to accent your eyes. Try a bright purple or blue swept across the lid. If you have darker skin tones, try a pink or maroon with a slight shimmer. Be fearless and have fun with this one. It’s a unique way to work in the brighter colors we overlook when the skies turn gray.

I hope you’re still wearing your sunscreen (yes, you should wear it on your face even in the winter) because this trend is calling for a natural looking, flawless face, free of sun damage. Think clear, au natural skin, not matte, not dewey. A little concealer and a foundation with good coverage will give you that effortless, natural look.

This season, blush is soft and almost non-existent. If you can’t leave the blush in the drawer, choose a pale peach or pink to flatter your skin tone and subtly accent your cheekbones. Orgasm by Nars works best for me. (Love the name too!)  It’s a universal color that looks good on most people.

Lips didn’t get much play on the runways this season, which means they were nude or dusted with a pale shimmer. You’ve heard the old adage, play up the lips or the eyes but not both? Again, this season is ALL about the eyes!
