I adore spring. Maybe it’s because I grew up in the Midwest where spring meant longer days and hopefully the last of the cold weather. Maybe it’s because it feels like everything old is new again. Maybe it’s because these days, the Easter bunny delivers a little chocolate and, if I’m lucky, jewelry.
But really, I love spring because of the clothes. The fresh colors and fabrics make me feel happy and renewed.
In all my excitement for the upcoming season, I’ve been leafing through the magazines trying to size up what I absolutely must have for spring. It’s not always easy to know how to pull off the latest trends. Different ages, personalities, and body types don’t make for a one size fits all fashion solution. That’s where Lanie Smith Wordes and my friends at the Tampa Saks Fifth Avenue store come in.
Last week I got a text from the ever so stylish Lanie, my go to style guru at Saks, inviting me to a fashion show featuring everything that’s hot for spring. This was perfect for me because I learn by immersion. Whatever I want to learn about, I immerse myself in until I come out the other side fluid and well-versed. The idea of immersing myself in Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Alice and Olivia, Vince, and all things fabulous at Saks made me giddy. (And, far better for my hips than immersing myself in the art of bread making, which was also on the table as an option.)
It was a lovely afternoon spent eating quiche and sipping wine. Denise Richardson, the Assistant General Manager of Merchandising, led us through the trends with perfectly chosen ensembles pulled from various departments throughout the store, as models (who apparently don’t eat quiche) wore the season’s hottest pieces.
After seeing the spring fashions, and listening to Denise’s expertise, the biggest take away I can share with you is that individualized style is always on trend. There is no more “your skirt must be this length” or “your neckline should be this low.” It’s about having fun and making it your own. So, without further adieu, here’s what’s making the scene this spring.
White & Neutrals ~
This season is full of bright color, but nothing may be as hot as white. White can be ladylike and demure…
Prints & Florals ~
This trend has a wide range of soft to bold and classic to modern.
If you’re thinking what I was thinking when I heard florals are in, you’re thinking old and stodgy. But I’m here to tell you that these florals, whether they are soft or vibrant, are modern and yours for the picking. You’ll find bouquets of luscious hues as well as monochrome floral designs on laser-cut leather pieces.
Bright Colors ~
This trend is easy to pull off regardless of age, body shape, or personality because a little color goes a long way.
So how do we pull off bright color effortlessly? Put a pop of bright color against a neutral outfit. (Think coral, lime green, or turquoise necklace or scarf.) Or, you can really step out and play color off of color. (Think turquoise jacket with lime green jeans.) I love the idea of bold color expression. Nothing says “I’ve got my own sense of style” like showing up for an event in a beautifully, tonally balanced ensemble.
Lace has been popular for a couple of seasons now, and it looks like it will stay on the forefront for another one.
Black & White ~
An old standby is taking the lead this season, but it’s more relevant and fresher than ever.
Here are some ideas of how to pull it off even without Chanel.
And last, but not least…
Makeup artistry seems to inspired this season by soft eyes with pops of color on the cheeks or lips. Pinks and corals are popular. When applied against a soft, nude face, the vibrant contrast feels youthful and fresh.
Great. We know what the trends are. Now what?
Don’t Aim for Trendy. Aim For Stylish.
The goal is to take a trend, or a hint of a trend, and make it completely your own. Trends become style when you intertwine them with your personality.
Do you like big, statement necklaces? Great. Buy a bright lime green one and wear it with a blue silk top. Are you demure and revel in the purity of white? Great. Buy a white lace top and pair it with a subtle pinstripe skinny jean. Maybe throw in that bright pink Rebecca Minkoff bag for a flirtatious feel. Be sexy. Be you. Have fun!
After all that talk about style and trends and fashion, I will leave you with one last thought…
