The Dos and Don’ts For a Happier Thanksgiving

The Dos and Don’ts For a Happier Thanksgiving

The days before a big holiday can feel overwhelming. We’re rushing around shopping, fighting traffic, and cooking—all while trying to be socially safe. Add to that, the cleaning and prepping and the family drama that usually ensues.

To keep things at a happier, more peaceful vibe this Thanksgiving, here are a few dos and don’ts.

Do plan ahead. I like to make my grocery list (these lists are cute) at least a week ahead of time. I divide my grocery list into departments (produce, dairy, meat, etc.) so that I’m not zig-zagging across the busy store multiple times dodging shopping cart traffic and invading hard to come by personal space.

Don’t forget to take care of yourself. Yes! We’re all trying to be the holiday superhero, but guess what? If you don’t have the perfect serving bowl (LOVE this color) or the best smelling candle, it’s ok. Take some “me” time and read a good book, take an epsom salt bath, or take a few minutes to meditate. All the rest and relaxation will leave you supercharged and ready to roast that turkey.

Do try new recipes. A few years ago, I made a completely gluten-free Thanksgiving feast, and it was delicious! I didn’t tell anyone but my husband that I changed up the traditional recipes. And guess what? They couldn’t stop talking about how delicious everything was. Go GF as much as possible! Your gut will thank you.

Don’t get caught up in family drama. We all have those family members who inevitably cause drama when they walk in the door (especially in the weeks after an election…). Here’s my advice: just expect it and be ready to let it roll off your back. I like to smile a lot and sip wine, especially while the drama’s unfolding. And who wouldn’t smile while sipping wine from this cup.

Do share your gratitude with your family and friends. I love going around the table and asking each guest what they’re grateful for. It’s also fun to use a page from The Five Minute Journal to prompt dinner conversation. If you’re going to be a guest, this journal makes a wonderful hostess gift.

Don’t practice gratitude only on Thanksgiving. I’ve said it before and I’m going to say it again: the number one way to fuel your own happiness is to practice gratitude. Be thankful for what you have right now, even during this tumultuous 2020, because in the magic that is the Universe, you have everything you need for the moment you’re in. And when you start practicing gratitude regularly, you’ll finally understand that happiness is a choice. It’s not something you chase. It’s right there for you to take hold of every day. Not just on Thanksgiving.

Do leave me a comment on social. I’m so thankful for all of you. I’d love to hear what you’re thankful for. Perhaps we can inspire each other to practice gratitude and choose happiness every day!

Wishing you a Thanksgiving filled with gratitude and love.
