Dermaplane For a Fuzz Free Face

I’ve been having my face dermaplaned for a while. One time was all it took to get addicted to dermaplaning for a fuzz free face. This quick and easy treatment along, with using great products, will make your skin look great and your makeup lay beautifully. Big event coming up? Perfect. In need a quick beauty boost? Perfect. Either way, dermaplaning is the way to go.

Recently, I sat down with skin guru Kaisa Marshall, of Skin NV, for a Q&A on dermaplaning.

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a gentle exfoliating skin treatment that is excellent for all types of skin. There is no downtime, so many of our clients at Skin NV like to get dermaplanes right before a big event or as maintenance between medical grade peels. As we age, our skin doesn’t turn over as quickly. Dermaplaning promotes the turn over of the skin making it appear smoother and brighter.

How do you do it?

The skin is first cleansed and dried, then the aesthetician places the scalpel at a slight angle and passes over the skin several times in a smooth motion, removing dead skin cells and vellus hair.

You use a scalpel? Does it hurt?

Not at all! The patient feels a mild scraping. If someone is very sensitive, the esthetician will adjust and use a lighter touch. We always ask for feedback and encourage communication.

I heard it’s also called a micropeel? Is it really a peel?

Well, we are manually “peeling” the skin so it is a light peel, but you will not see any peeling afterward. So there is no downtime. It is the original “Lunchtime Peel.” You can go out to lunch and go back to work looking fabulous! At Skin NV, we call it a “micropeel” if you ask us to apply either a lactic or salicylic acid after the dermaplane and then finish with dry ice to spot treat any blemishes.

What are the benefits of dermaplaning?

It helps the skin look and feel smoother and brighter, and your products will penetrate better making them more effective. It is especially good for people who have a lot of red in their skin as it does not break delicate capillaries like micodermabrasion. Make-up artists encourage their clients to get dermaplanes or micro peels a couple days prior to events because the skin in much smoother and make-up sets nicely because we remove the vellus hair from the face.

How often should I get one?

Once a month is recommended for the best results.

How much does it cost?

Prices range from $60 to $150. At Skin NV we charge $80.

What do you do to make sure the instruments are sanitized?

We use a new blade for each patient and soak handles in Barbacide during the day. Then we sterilize them once a day using an autoclave.

Is there any down time?

No, it’s a great maintenance procedure for busy lifestyles.

What products should I use to care for my skin afterward to keep the glow?

Wait a few hours before using anything. But, we recommend a good skin care regime that includes:

1. Cleansing:

We love this LifeLine Brightening Cleanser that gently exfoliates the dead skin cells away. Or, this gentle, Ormedic organic cleanser.

2. Anti-Oxidant Protection:

This is key to fight the environmental damage to your skin. I’ve tried a lot of vitamin C serums, but the Dermaceutic Serum C25 offers the most benefit.

3. Sunscreen:

We recommend you wear the right kind of sunscreen on your face every day. We love MD Solar SPF 30.

4. Makeup

We always recommend Oxygenetix Makeup or a mineral makeup because they are breathable, promote healing, inhibit bacteria growth and provide added sun protection.
